Delicious DIRT. GREAT Event TONIGHT

We know it’s last minute and it’s a Monday night folks.  But, when do you get a chance to hear some of the most vibrant and successful restaurateurs speak while networking with young real estate mavens?  And even better, when can you ask anything your little heart desires?  This evening is your chance.  Tonight is a rare opportunity to learn, to mix, mingle and make your voice heard.  This is an event we highly recommended.

The Young Real Estate Group and the
Real Estate & Building Trades Division of the Jewish United Fund invite you to a panel presentation of:

TONIGHT: The Art of the Restaurant Deal @ Hotel Palomar.  Featuring: Rob Katz (Boka Group), Brendan Sodikoff (Gilt, Maudes, Curio, Donut Vault), Lawrence B. Swibel

Come hear three distinguished Chicago restaurateurs (some of our faves) discuss the process of launching a successful restaurant, from visualizing an idea to scouting locations to opening night. After the panel presentation there will an opportunity to ask questions and network with other real estate professionals. Click here for Facebook event page.

Last week, at the media preview French De-light,  Elevate Your Presence got a sneak preview of new healthy spa menu at Café des Architectes.  This resto, inside Chicago’s Sofitel, is a wonderful ode to French fare.  All of the gorgeous delicious presentations are low calorie (most are under 100).  Some highlights included coconut and passion fruit mousse and rillettes of mackerel. Check out CDA here, and Restaurant Week here. Can’t wait to indulge?  OH did we forget to mention -the French De-light menu is available during Restaurant Week too so get there soon.

Food nerds all over the world anxiously await the James Beard award nominees / winners every year. Some cuisine obsessives even get more excited than the nominees themselves! Literally, every year, from March to May, food lovers get dehydrated from salivating so much.  We’re sure you know by now that the JB semi-finalists were just announced. Of course, Chicago’s best are getting nods. Check out the list complete here and get ready, on March 21, the finalists will be announced. Delicious DIRT’s anticipating greatness…

How does pioneering deep dish pizza joint Giordano’s file for bankruptcy?! Yes, that’s what Crain’s Chicago Business reported last week. The chain defaulted on a Fifth Third Bank loan and has filed Chapter 11. The restaurants will remain open, but if things really go awry, we know the tourists will flock to Lou Malnati’s or, dare we say, Gino’s? We at Delicious DIRT and Food Mafia like My Pie, D’agostinos, and Bricks.  Stay tuned for all the inside info on the greatest pizza joints in the Chi….

Delicious DIRT. Exclusive Interview

Inside: DIRT Exclusive Part 2 with Eater Chicago’s Ari Bendersky

Finally, Delicious DIRT is bringing you a bit more with one of our favorite food big shots, Ari Bendersky.  This time, the action is a bit more personal… We know you’re already crazy about Ari, but after you read this, you’ll fall even harder.  You’ll learn the hottie behind Eater Chicago is a lover of all things dog, loves love like we do, appreciates beauty in food and has fab taste in movies.  He’s taken… so don’t get your stalker on ladies and gents.  But definitely fasten your seat belts, and tightly. Enjoy the ride.  Um, it’s impossible not to.  For Part 1 with AB, click here.

Ari Bendersky

Delicious DIRT (DD): Name your all time top 12 favorite things?
Ari Bendersky (AB): Not sure these are my 12 faves but it’s a pretty good list: Navy cashmere hoodie from J. Crew; my summers at Camp Chi; spending a semester in Madrid during college; watching the sun rise from Masada in Israel; watching the sun set from our favorite villa in Puerto Vallarta every winter; grilling in the summer; drinking rosé on any patio in the summer; getting my New York magazine each week; Cheddar char dogs with cheddar fries from Michael’s; Spending weekends at my parents pool with my family, my LeMond road bike; my dog, Emma and partner, Drew.

DD: What 7 movies do you love the most?  Could watch over & over?
AB: St. Elmo’s Fire; About Last night; Moulin Rouge; Color Purple; Almost Famous; Pretty Woman; Breakfast Club.

DD: What are the greatest food porn scenes in tv & film in your opinion?
AB: Friends when Joey had to eat all the lasagnas.

DD: How do you start & end each day?
AB: Start: stretch, walk my dog, make tea, have some breakfast and start posting to Eater.  End: Try desperately to read for more than 5-10 minutes before I completely zonk out. Then give my partner a kiss and fall asleep.

DD: Be specific, what for each meal and how often do you dine out?
AB: Breakfast: Sometimes oatmeal with fruit, sometimes eggs, always some Lifeway kefir. Lunch: usually tuna or chicken breast and salad. Dine out about 3x per week.  Usually don’t go out for lunch during the week.

DD: What do you cherish most in your life?
AB: My partner, Drew, and our dog, Emma.

Oh Ari, you are one in a million.  Thank you for letting us inside.

If you have not heard by now, you must be hiding under a rock because it’s been the HOT topic of the week! @ryanpoli is leaving Boka Group’s Perennial March 7  to join Tavernita, which the Mercadito team will open this summer.  Our friends / owners of Perennial say a celeb chef is on the way but mum’s the word for a while.

Boston’s hottest resto, Towne Stove and Spirits, offers a dream-like experience. With their Alice in Wonderland-Esque kitchen, three “See and be Scene at” bars, and lobster menu with 11 different preparations of New England’s favorite delicacy to top off the whole experience, who wouldn’t fall in love with Towne Stove and Spirits? This is definitely on our list of New England restos to visit and we look forward to trying out the other delish offerings from the kitchen team including: an eclectic international menu of whole roasted local seafood, Peking chicken, steaks to share, tandoori meats, wood-fired rotisserie chicken and delish Persian rice.

If you haven’t heard because you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll know that Restaurant Week commences this Friday, Feb. 18 and runs through Feb. 27. Make resos if you haven’t already, because RW is incredibly popular. Most Chicago food nerds think agree it’s the best invention since sliced bread- especially in a down economy. Some of our faves are participating including OneSixtyBlue, Chicago Cut Steakhouse, Prosecco, Michelin starred Blackbird and Boka. Lunches are $22 for three courses, while dinners range from $33-44 depending on the restaurant and its food. Eat up and enjoy!
