Brunacci of Franks ‘n Dawgs to Open The Peasantry in May

Courtesy of Franks N Dawgs

Owner of Franks ‘n Dawgs, Alexander Brunacci, is gearing up to bring us a second restaurant – and no doubt flavors will blow minds. Brunacci will be sticking to the same street food / fine dining flavors for his new project called The Peasantry while adding a additional menu items. The Peasantry is scheduled to open in May, and although there is no set menu yet, get these ideas in your naughty food porn mind: gyros made from ingredients like baby octopus, duck, or venison; duck wings prepared in buffalo-wing style; escargots; frog legs; grilled flatbreads; and house-made pastas. If this isn’t even the full menu yet, can you just IMAGINE what we’ve got in store? Word has it that a few of Franks ‘n Dawgs signature items (the house made sausages and lobster-roll bun) will transfer over to The Peasantry. What to expect: table service, a possible liquor license, and reasonably priced original food. Can not wait. 2723 N. Clark St.

If you have not heard by now, you must be hiding under a rock because it’s been the HOT topic of the week! @ryanpoli is leaving Boka Group’s Perennial March 7  to join Tavernita, which the Mercadito team will open this summer.  Our friends / owners of Perennial say a celeb chef is on the way but mum’s the word for a while.

Boston’s hottest resto, Towne Stove and Spirits, offers a dream-like experience. With their Alice in Wonderland-Esque kitchen, three “See and be Scene at” bars, and lobster menu with 11 different preparations of New England’s favorite delicacy to top off the whole experience, who wouldn’t fall in love with Towne Stove and Spirits? This is definitely on our list of New England restos to visit and we look forward to trying out the other delish offerings from the kitchen team including: an eclectic international menu of whole roasted local seafood, Peking chicken, steaks to share, tandoori meats, wood-fired rotisserie chicken and delish Persian rice.

Want more JUICE.  You’re in luck!

To Open: Mercadito Sister Spot in the Chi- Tavernita

It’s general consensus that we all love Mercadito—that New York import that took Chicago by storm with its delicious Mexican food. Now we have even more reason to love it. It’s getting a sibling of sorts this summer.

Though we loved the baked goat cheese at Martini Park, it wasn’t enough to keep the patrons rolling in, so the owners of Mercadito decided to purchase the space and transform it into Tavernita. “It’s not Mexican. It’s somewhat of an eclectic mix of Latin, Spanish, American concept…” said Larry Silver, Managing Partner Mercadito Hospitality. Sounds incredibly appetizing. But close your mouths for a minute. It’s not scheduled to open until this summer. But until then, Mercadito is still hot and is even participating in restaurant week. Get your Mexican food fix from Feb. 17-28 during the course of Chicago Restaurant Week.

In Girl & The Goat News: Saveur, Food & Wine’s ‘People’s Best’, James Beard Dinner…

The highly respected food monthly Saveur, has just announced that they will include long form essay-type restaurant reviews in every issue beginning with the March 2011 issue, and Girl & the Goat and Stephanie Izard are lucky number one. Kudos continues to roll in for the restaurant. Executive Editor Dana Bowen wrote the review, and she seems to be enamored with the place. “Stephanie Izard’s pizza doesn’t taste like any pizza I’ve had before…it’s crisp in all the right places and piping hot with gooey cheddar, Gouda, and tomme-style cheeses…”

The Mediterranean goat-heavy fare has won fans the world over, and has even received a nod from the James Beard Foundation. Stephanie and The Goat were selected to host a James Beard house dinner at the restaurant, which quickly sold out. But the recognition doesn’t stop there. Vaunted publication Food & Wine introduces us to their Best New Chefs every year, and this year, they’ve implemented a People’s Best New Chef award that includes Stephanie Izard as a nominee for the Great Lakes region. If you’re interested to see who will come out as top toque, why don’t you take part of this democratic process and vote in the eatocracy here?

Sushi Samba Rio’s Carnaval March 5th:

Brazilian Carnaval is upon us, and we love that the sexiness that it exudes, although we don’t celebrate it in the States. However, SushiSamba Rio is having its own Carnaval version here in the city. On March 5, the restaurant will transform into the streets of Rio with samba dancers, drummers, and costumes inspired by Carnaval performers. There will even be a Brazilian inspired menu and drinks to really get you in a sexy Brazilian mood. Call 312 595 2300 to make a reservation, and check out for info about the restaurant.

Ing restaurant soft opens tonight. We’re very excited. Last night’s media preview of the restaurant really got everyone buzzing. What can we expect from Homaru Cantu, the god of molecular gastronomy in Chicago? Well, peep the menu here and make resos now.  The grand opening will be March 1, 2011.

Breaking news in the resto world- it is finally public knowledge that hottie Chef Brandon Baltzley will be heading up the kitchen at Tribute in the Essex Inn (South Loop). Baltzley is one of our faves  and literally cooks up heaven.  He hails from NYC and has worked briefly in the kitchens of Mado, Alinea, and Schwa in the Chi.  Tribute is looking to be a long term position for Baltzley and we can not wait.

Chef Brandon Baltzley

Baltzley gave us the scoop a few weeks ago, but it was not until today that he confirmed with DIRT it’s signed sealed and delivered.  “Just had the meeting 3 hours ago,” his text read.  The resto will open in May and will seat 100 in the dining room with private party rooms and bar areas for another 100.

At last week’s Pop-Up Dinner for soon to open Tula Restorante, Baltzley chatted with us exclusively after serving up a solid 6 course meal for Jose Cervante’s newbie.  DIRT’s coverage of this and the Pop-Up dinner is coming this week… Stay tuned and see menu below.  For more info on Tribute, see Eater’s piece here.

Tula's Pop Up Dinner Menu

You’re going to have to have a strong stomach for this one. Whisky Fest is upon us. Yes, that annual event that has us salivating before it starts, and swimmy in the head and sick to our stomachs after it ends. Whiskey producers from around the world let you taste their prized drink. Not only do you get your alcoholic fix (250 types), but a giant buffet, a souvenir Glencairn whiskey glass, and seminars (if you choose) from Master Distillers. What more could any person want? 4/15 6:30-9:30, Hyatt Regency.

Delicious DIRT. JUICE

Most Chicagoans have heard of the Hamburger University in Oak Brook, IL, but you may not have heard about Hamburger University in Shanghai. McDonald’s are popping up around China like weeds, and because the Chinese are super diligent and competitive about EVERYTHING, they also turn managing a McDonald’s into sport. Their five-day managerial training course only accepts eight out of every 1000 applicants, and has a lower acceptance rate than Harvard’s, which hovers around 7 percent. Wow!

Our buds over at the Daily Meal revealed what they thought to be the “14 most bank-breaking dishes” here. Do you agree? What foods or menus have you had that required taking out a second mortgage?

Delicious DIRT’s Morning JUICE-

  • Nick over at Grub Street tells Elevate Your Presence‘s Delicious Dirt that Prix Fixe opens on Friday in Lincoln Square. No, that’s not a typo, and yes, that’s its name; an aptly titled resto serving a $35 three-course menu with French and Italian influences. For those who are decidedly commitment-phobic and wish Vday would just go away, there will be a few a la carte menu items from which to choose.
  • You know, USA has NEVER won the Bocuse d’Or. The closest we’ve ever come is sixth place a few times. The two-day competition ended yesterday, and guess which country won? Denmark came in first, followed by Sweden and Norway. We’re wondering if this has anything to do with a Danish restaurant (Noma) having been bestowed the honor of Best Restaurant in the World. Hmmm… Or maybe there’s a reason why Noma beat out elbulli and its chef placed first in the. Is Rene Redzepi literally the world’s all around greatest chef? Via Eater
  • We were all shocked when we heard elbulli was closing for good in 2014 (even though the majority of us would never get to go). Our mouths still agape, we got word that it was actually closing in 2012. We nearly fell on the floor when we heard Ferran Adria was re-opening elbulli as…a culinary foundation?! Now, The Feast tells us that there will be an “eco-neighborhood” and “park.”
  • Everyone’s fave pork palace, The Publican, is collaborating with Lagunitas Brewing Company out of California to offer a special house beer that would possibly be sold in your local liquor store.
  • As you know by now, Taco Bell is having a beef about what percentage of beef their tacos are! A lawsuit is being filed stating that Taco Bell’s beef filling is only 36% beef, but the chief Taco dude, President Greg Creed, states that the number is actually 86% beef and that the rest is …other ingredients that contribute to the quality of our product.” Read about it in Where’s The Beef and  via Eater. Hopefully there’s no countersuit about libel. Eek!
